Abstract: A new trend in providing open access for clinical data repositories for research on a national and global scale has surfaced numerous old and new academic, ethical and legal issues. The pace of innovations enabled by information technology poorly matches the more slowly changing academic traditions, legal systems and ethical frameworks that have informed decisions about the use of clinical data for research in the past. This talk will focus on issues across this spectrum that have recently engendered expanded debate.
