SCSB Crystallography Announcements

July 2011: The Rigaku Ultimate Home Lab and BioSAXS-1000 arrive at UTMB and installation begins. The first data set from the FR-E/R-AXIS-IV gave higher resolution data then from similar crystals at a national synchrotron (name withheld). The only difference is the time span for significant radiation damage goes from hours to a little over a day (24-36 hours). The BioSAXS-1000 is producing excellent SAXS data to exceptionally high q, for a home source.

January 2011: The Center is in the process of purchasing new x-ray diffraction and solution scattering instrumentation for the lab. The new equipment starts with the Rigaku Ultimate Home Lab® which comprises the unsurpassed high-brilliance FR-E++DW Superbright x-ray generator, with the industry standard RAXIS-IV++ crystallography system with both Cu and Cr optics. In addition, we are acquiring the innovative Rigaku BioSAXS-1000, the first SAXS instrument dedicated to biological research in the southern mid-western states, once again marking UTMB as a leader in structural biology resources.

December 2010: XUG Newsletter #3. News about the SAXNS, and CrystalTrak plate codes for intelliplate, Linbro, and CrysChem trays.

May 2010: XUG Newsletter #2. How to keep the Phoenix clean.

October 2009: XUG Newsletter #1. The Hotel arrives.

August 2009: Through a partnership with the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology , and Neuroscience and Cell Biology, the Sealy Center for Structural Biology and Molecular Biophysics (SCSB) has recently upgraded the X-Ray facilities. The SCSB has purchased the Rigaku CrystalMation Gallery160 (Hotel) for automated crystal tray imaging using our DT-Minstrel. This addition completes the crystallization robotics upgrade began in 2007 with the initial purchase of the Rigaku CrystalMation system.

August 2007: Through a partnership with the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology , and Neuroscience and Cell Biology, the Sealy Center for Structural Biology and Molecular Biophysics (SCSB) has recently completed an expansion of the X-Ray facilities. In addition to the purchase of XENOCS confocal optics for data collection, SCSB has purchased the Rigaku CrystalMation system to facilitate high-throughput crystallization screening. The platform technology contains three inter-connected robotics systems: The PHOENIX, the Alchemist II, and the Desktop MINSTRAL, which are integrated through the CrystalTrak crystallization database software program. This technology provides SCSB members and collaborators with automation at each step, from custom screen preparation to crystallization trial imaging and analysis. The system was installed in mid August and has seen heavy use since.

January 2007: New SCSB web site launced. The Entire SCSB web site has been revamped. On-line scheduling, for qualified users, is now available for all Instruments.
